3. Perform Disk Defragmentation

When there is no enough space to store in a tough drive, a OS splits a record in to tools as great as stores it in opposite areas upon a tough drive. Defragmenting allows all these tools to be stored in constant mental recall locations. For defragmenting hoop do a following:

Go Beyond AIM…

This one’s mainly for Mac users, but can be used for Windows as well. Last week, I wrote a review of Meebo, a multi-IM app for iPhone (also Beejive IM, a similar app). Meebo also has an online webapp component for PC use, but many (including myself), prefer full applications – such as iChat, Mac OS’s built in IM app.

Now, it’s easy to set up AIM with iChat – just type in screen name and password, and you’re good to go. But in recent years, new chat services have been cropping up – specifically, Google Talk and Facebook Chat – as part of accounts you already have. Now for me, I hate having multiple things open for what is essentially the same purpose. So, here’s a little help in setting up iChat with not only AIM, but Google Talk or Facebook Chat as well.

Google Talk (Snow Leopard 10.6) -

This one’s pretty easy – iChat 5 has the feature of adding a Google Account just as easily as an AIM account – just select the Google Account option when creating a new account in preferences.

Google Talk (10.4 Tiger/10.5 Leopard) –

A bit more difficult, but not by much. When creating a new account, select “Jabber Account” – as the ID, enter your Gmail account “______@gmail.com”, your password as the password. The server is talk.google.com, and the port is 5223 – and check the Use SSL box. All set.

Facebook Chat: (10.4-10.6) –

Similar to Google Talk – but a few differences. First, you need your Facebook username – “______@chat.facebook.com” – which you can find by going to the “Account Settings” – where it lists your username (right after your name, 2nd from the top). Going into iChat now – in Preferences, go to the “Add Account”, and again, select Jabber. Enter in the “______@chat.facebook.com”, the _____ being your Facebook username from earlier, and the password, your regularly Facebook password. Server options are: server is “chat.facebook.com”, Port is 5222. Uncheck SSL for this one. And you’re good to go.

Personal tip – in General Preferences in iChat, enable “Use the same status for all accounts” – allowing you to log in and out of all 3 at once. Enjoy!

Now, for everyone else – those not using iChat. While not personally familiar with these programs, Google lists here how to set up other clients, and Facebook is compatable with Pidgin, Adium, and anything else that can use Jabber using settings that they give here. Enjoy!

In the past, we have written several posts on how to burn DVD’s, how to burn Windows 7 discs, and even some stuff on Blu-ray discs. However, we have yet to post about one of the most simple things. What to do if you get a CD or DVD stuck in your computers optical drive, and it won’t eject. You can take several steps to troubleshoot stuck DVDs or CDs.

Computers are what they are, complex. Meaning, a stuck DVD could be one of several possible things. Sometimes it may be easy to fix. Sometimes, not so easy. The best thing to do is troubleshoot the problem.

Here is what you should not do:

- Stick a screwdriver, pocket knife, credit card, or any other object into the DVD drive and try to pry it open or pull the disc out. When stuff doesn’t work right, I feel like tossing my computer across the room just as much as the next guy. But just don’t do it. Troubleshoot first.

Method 1 – Try Ejecting from Within Windows

Navigate on over to Start > Computer. Right-click on your CD/DVD drive choose eject from the drop down menu. Sometimes you can eject the stuck disc using Windows commands.

Method 2 – Software and Drivers

The CD/DVD drive was working a week ago right? But all of a sudden it just stops. Chances are good, that you may have installed a program, application, update, driver, etc., that messed with the CD/DVD drive driver.

To troubleshoot this, try doing a system restore. A system restore will uninstall several files and changes to your computer that were made within a certain time frame. If you have just recently upgraded your operating system, this often times cause some device drivers incompatibilities.

Another thing that you can try, is uninstalling the driver for your CD/DVD drive, and reinstalling it. To do this, you will need to make sure that you have a backup of your driver. You should be able to download it from your CD/DVD drive manufacturer’s website.

Method 3 – Force Eject

Next, you can try to to force eject the CD/DVD tray to open. Not all drives and burners have this feature. To check to see if yours does, look near the face of the CD/DVD drive and you should see a small hole.

Use a toothpick, bent paperclip, or needle to push the button. This may or may not pop open the drive. Many people have reported that this does not work. But some have reported that it does. May the force eject be with you.

Method 4 – Some Weird Stuff That Works

Close out of all applications and make sure that you have saved anything that needs to be saved. Restart your computer. As soon as it starts loading back up, even before you see the Windows loading screen, start pressing the eject button on the drive.

If you are using a slot loading drive (MacBook), this would be the eject button on your keyboard. Don’t hold the button down. Push it repeatedly and rapidly, like it’s the A button and your on level 10 of Mario Bros trying to beat Bowser. Believe it or not, this works a lot of the time. If Windows loads to the login screen, and the tray isn’t open, stop pressing.

- Shut down your computer, disconnect the power cable, and wait a couple of minutes. Plug it back in, start it up, and try the step above. To learn more about that, check out this article on USB connection problems.

- Give it a little tap. Don’t use a lot of power, just a light tap. Sometimes, especially in slot loading drives, the disc may just jump out of place.

What You Can Do Now

Internal CD/DVD drives are fairly simple to swap out in desktop computers. You can find tutorials all over the internet. However, laptop drives are not as easy. If you don’t feel comfortable trying to replace the internal CD/DVD drive, you can always get an external drive. They are pretty decently priced, under $100.

Running out of hard disk space for your virtual machines you created for running other operating systems? There is a solution that does not require increasing your internal hard disk space.

Previously, we have written about how to How to install Ubuntu in VirtualBox and How to install Windows 7 on a PC with VirtualBox. We have now discovered that VirtualBox is available in a portable version you can install on a USB Drive.

Download Portable-VirtualBox from http://www.vbox.me/?dir=./VirtualBox%20v3.1.4. The file is a self-extracting .zip file.

Run the executable you downloaded and extract the contents of the file to your external USB drive.

A Portable-VirtualBox folder is created on your USB drive. Navigate to the Portable-VirtualBox folder and double-click the Portable-VirtualBox.exe file.

The Portable-VirtualBox dialog box displays. Select the options you want (the four check boxes) and click the Download installation file of VirtualBox button.

A notification displays over the dialog box…

as well as in the System Tray at the bottom of the screen.

Once the download is finished, a dialog box displays informing you where the downloaded file is located.

In the Portable-VirtualBox folder, you will see a VirtualBox.exe file. However, do not run this file.

Double-click on the Portable-VirtualBox.exe file again. The Portable-VirtualBox dialog box displays again. Select the desired options. However, this time, click the Search File button and select the VirtualBox.exe file. Click OK.

The program files and folders are extracted to the Portable-VirtualBox folder.

Double-click on the Portable-VirtualBox.exe file again. The main VirtualBox window displays.

NOTE: You may see a registration screen first. You don’t have to register, but the screen will display every time you open VirtualBox until you register. There does not seem to be an option to stop VirtualBox from asking you to register.

When you create new virtual machines they are automatically stored in the data folder in the Portable-VirtualBox folder on your USB drive.

Now you can create virtual machines on your USB drive just like you would on your internal hard drive. You can refer to How to install Ubuntu in VirtualBox and How to install Windows 7 on a PC with VirtualBox for information on installing a couple of different operating systems with VirtualBox.

A lot of misinformation is floating around out there in cyberspace concerning the security threat of cookies. Truthfully, cookies are benign little nuggets that help make our browsing, shopping, and online research experiences much more convenient.

However, there is a simple way to disable cookies either permanently or temporarily in Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) in case you feel the need. In order to do so, you will need to make two decisions because there are two types of cookies, first-party and third-party. Read on to learn about first-party and third-party cookies and how to disable them in IE8.

What are Cookies?

Before you disable any cookies in IE8, make sure you understand what cookies are and the security threat, if any, they pose. A cookie is a small text file that contains some pertinent information about you and the website you are viewing.

Most cookies help you keep track of usernames, passwords, and what you have in your shopping cart while shopping online. Cookies are not executable programs and cannot contain or spread viruses.

Some cookies are used to track advertisements that have been displayed in your browser. This is so that you don’t see the same advertisement repeatedly. There are some cookies that keep track of your browsing habits but they do not identify you personally. Still, some people find this to be too intrusive and opt to disable cookies as a good measure.

First and Third-Party Cookies

Put simply, first-party cookies are those cookies that come from the site you have chosen to visit. When you visit Amazon.com and the company puts a cookie on your computer to track your shopping cart, this is a first-party cookie.

Third-party cookies are those that come from another source other than the website you are visiting. The majority of third-party cookies are used by advertising companies to serve up advertisements on the site you are viewing.

Just as a side note: There is no such thing as a second-party cookie. You, as the visitor of a website, are the second party.

How to Disable First and Third-Party Cookies in IE8

To disable cookies in IE8, begin by clicking on Tools and then Internet Options. You should now be looking at the Internet Options window.

Click on the Privacy tab and then click on the Advanced button under Settings.

This will open the Advanced Privacy Settings window. Next, click the box next to the option titled Override Automatic Cookies Handling to unlock the first and third-party cookies options

Here, you have a few decisions to make. Notice that each type of cookie has three settings. The first setting titled Accept will accept all cookies from either first or third-party sources. The Block setting will block all cookies.

The third setting is a good balance between accepting all cookies and blocking all cookies. By selecting Prompt, IE8 will notify you every time a website attempts to save either a first or third-party cookie to your computer.

Although this sounds like a nice option, be prepared to do a lot of clicking whenever you visit a website that uses either type of cookie. Also, keep in mind that some websites’ features will not work if you automatically block or choose to block cookies when prompted.

You may have noticed another option on the Advanced Privacy Settings window. You have the option to Always Allow Session Cookies. Session cookies are often used by a website to keep track of your immediate, but not long-term, website experience.

Some shopping carts use session cookies that are discarded once you leave the site. If you find that some website features are not working as expected, consider allowing session cookies to make those features work again.

Although a somewhat drastic method of protecting your computer, Microsoft makes it possible to disable all downloads in Internet Explorer 8.

There are several situations when disabling downloads in IE8 provides a temporary or permanent fix to guard your PC against viruses, worms, Trojan horses, and other malware. Read on to learn why and how to stop users of your computer from downloading files.

Why Disable Downloads?

Some downloaded files carry with them more of a threat to your computer’s security than others. Executable files with an *.exe file extension are particularly dangerous because those files, as their name implies, have executable code. Unless you are absolutely sure that a downloaded executable file is from a trustworthy source, you should never click on this type of file.

Ask any experienced computer administrator and he/she will tell you that the threat from viruses and other malware goes up exponentially as more people have access to and use a PC. Even in a home environment, impatient kids or inexperienced users are more likely to click away on anything that looks enticing. Disabling the ability to download files is one thing you can do to protect your computer from these users’ actions.

Finally, if you have a guest account on your computer that anyone can use, you need a method of protecting your PC from malicious downloads. The safest alternative is to disallow any downloads at all. After all, if a person doesn’t have his/her own account on a computer and must use the guest account, you have a strong incentive to protect yourself against the actions of this casual user.

How to Disable Downloads in IE8

Luckily, disabling downloads in IE8 is just a few clicks away. Begin by opening up IE8 and clicking on Tools on the menu bar. Then click on Internet Options to open the Internet Options window.

On the Internet Options window, click on the Security tab and then click on the Custom Level button located in the Security Level for this Zone section.

You should now be looking at the Security Settings – Internet Zone window. In the Settings box, scroll down to the Downloads section and locate an option titled File Download. Change this option from Enabled to Disabled. Click the OK button.

IE8 now asks if you want to change the settings for this zone. Click OK.

In order for this change to take effect, you must restart IE8. Close IE8 and reopen it.

If you want to test the setting, go to any reputable site and try to download a file. As an example, you could go to www.adobe.com and try to download Adobe Reader. Notice that when you click to download the file, IE8 gives you a security alert and informs you that your security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded.

For the ultimate protection from malicious downloads, consider disabling downloads in IE8 altogether. Although a drastic approach to computer security, this may be your most powerful weapon against malware when many people use your computer or if you have a guest account on your PC.

Once again we will be discussing Dreamweaver and how to enhance its abilities. Let’s review a couple of handy features that Dreamweaver offers for developers. Code Coloring in Dreamweaver will turn certain pieces of code into specific colors (see figure 1 below).

These colors can be user defined by using the preferences within Dreamweaver. In a Windows environment, these can be found in Edit and then Preferences and then Code Coloring and choose the type of code you want to redefine and click on Edit Coloring Scheme.

Code Hints in Dreamweaver will assist you with language functions. As you complete a language function name, Dreamweaver will display the parameters of the function. It’s a very handy feature in case you can’t remember every parameter requirement for every function.

See figure 2 below for an example of Code Hints. Also, see this post to review how to edit and modify these two features:

A third feature that really completes Dreamweaver’s development abilities is Code Completion. As you type a language function name, Dreamweaver has the ability to make suggestions in order to help you complete the function’s name.

This is a very handy feature. For example, let’s say you wanted to use one of the mysql_fetch functions. Once you type mysql_fetch_ you should see a popup similar to this image:

Code Coloring, Code Hints and Code Completion are wonderful features of Dreamweaver. But, what if you want to add functions in the Code Completion that are not already included? For example, the always loved oci_ functions. Here’s what our Dreamweaver looks like when we type in oci_ :

Dreamweaver, our beloved Swiss Army Knife of development tools, has no code completion for the php oci_ functions. That just won’t do. In this post, we’re going to show you how to modify Dreamweaver’s Code Completion capabilities. We will work with the oci_fetch functions as examples.

Preparation

As always, MAKE A BACKUP COPY OF YOUR ORIGINAL FILES. Never save over a file without making a backup of the original.

Also, you will need to be able to view hidden files. You can make hidden files visible in Windows Explorer by clicking on Tools and then Folder Options, then click on the View tab and under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.

One final reminder, NEVER use Dreamweaver to modify a Dreamweaver configuration file. It’s like sending a text to a fellow IT employee complaining about the Director of your IT Department, except you accidently send it to the Director of your IT Department. Bad things will happen.

Modifying the Code Completion File

The file we want to modify is titled CodeHints.xml and in CS3 and CS4 it is located in Program Files, Adobe, Adobe Dreamweaver (version number), Configuration and then CodeHints. We have previously modified our file to already contain the oci_fetch functions. A section of our CodeHints.xml file looks like this:

You will want to find the line that contains the first oci_fetch function pattern. In our file, that’s line 2078. In the line preceding (2077) you want to insert this piece of code:

<menu pattern=”oci_fetch_” doctypes=”PHP_MySQL” caseSensitive=”true”>

Next, you will need a line similar to the following for each oci_fetch function that exists:

<menuitem label=” all” value=”all(” icon=”ThirdPartyTags/PHP.gif”/>

And finally, you want to add the following line to wrap up the menu pattern:

</menu>

Our completed code block for this section looks like this:

<menu pattern=”oci_fetch_” doctypes=”PHP_MySQL” caseSensitive=”true”>

<menuitem label=”all” value=”all(” icon=”ThirdPartyTags/PHP.gif”/>

<menuitem label=”array” value=”array(” icon=”ThirdPartyTags/PHP.gif”/>

<menuitem label=”assoc” value=”assoc(” icon=”ThirdPartyTags/PHP.gif”/>

<menuitem label=”object” value=”object(” icon=”ThirdPartyTags/PHP.gif”/>

<menuitem label=”row” value=”row(” icon=”ThirdPartyTags/PHP.gif”/>

</menu>

Next, save the modified CodeHints.xml file and s tart Dreamweaver. If you already had Dreamweaver open, you will need to restart it. Open a PHP page and try out the new oci_fetch_ code completion feature. Ours looks like this now:

As you can see, when we type oci_fetch_ we Dreamweaver pops up the code completion window and offers the 5 oci_fetch_ functions we entered in the menu pattern code sample above.

Explanation of Modification

Let’s review the code we added to the CodeHints.xml file to achieve the oci_fetch_ code completion feature. The first line:

<menu pattern=”oci_fetch_” doctypes=”PHP_MySQL” caseSensitive=”true”>

This line explains to Dreamweaver that we are instituting a pattern for Code Completion. The pattern is everything in quotes after the first equal sign. So, anytime you type oci_fetch_ Dreamweaver needs to display the following menuitem labels as code completion options. The first menuitem label looks like this:

<menuitem label=”all” value=”all(” icon=”ThirdPartyTags/PHP.gif”/>

The label portion of this line is the text to be displayed in the code completion pop up. The value is what to display if we choose this code completion option. Once you choose an option from the code completion pop up, it will automatically include the pattern and the value.

So, if you choose array from the code completion pop up, Dreamweaver will insert oci_fetch_array( into the code for you. Finally, Because we like to be complete nerds, the icon feature is the icon that should appear in the code completion pop up.

Obviously, since we are working with PHP functions, we want the PHP icon to appear. The last line that we added was used to notify Dreamweaver the menu pattern was ending:

</menu>

If you already have the code hint for the oci_fetch_ functions in the CodeHints.xml file, you should also see the parameters listed for the function you choose from the code completion pop up box. We picked array from the code completion pop up box and our code hint looks like this:

You will also notice, since we have the oci_fetch_array function in our PHP.xml file under the CodeColoring directory, it appears blue on the screen.

Wrap Up

In this post we covered how to modify Dreamweaver’s code completion feature. Feel free to experiment with code completion in Dreamweaver. Please remember to make a backup copy of anything you are going to modify.

SharePod for Windows (no, that’s not my iPod- it’s a pic I found online )

Got a bunch of music and videos on your iPod and want to make sure you have them backed up onto your computer?

This is a great little program that not just does it’s job, but does it really well. The program is called SharePod and can be downloaded for free here (don’t worry this won’t give your computer viruses or anything like that — I got it here and no problems on my PC). Anyways, all you do once you download this small file is open it up, click on the items you want to copy to you computer and click on the icon in the upper left that says “Copy to PC.” Then you select the folder you want the items to go into (I would recommend you put it in My Music or Desktop– or anywhere you’d remember it’s location), then click OK- and your done! Your files are now on your computer!

Now let’s say you wanna take those files you backed up (say you got them from a different computer in your house), and now transfer them to your iTunes. Well, don’t worry, this is also just a quick step away. Open iTunes and go to “File Add File to Library”, then go to where you saved your file from your iPod on your computer (see, this is where knowing where you saved the file is important ), and click on it to add to your iTunes library. If its a video, then the file will go to your Movie’s section in iTunes, and if it’s a song, then it will go to music.

See, that wasn’t so hard , and now you got your songs and videos saved onto your computer.

SharePod is a free download from Download.com, and works with Windows XP and Vista, as well as with all iPod’s and iPhone’s including the iPhone 3G and new iPod Touch (2nd Generation) and iPod Nano (4th Generation).

So, what you think- this work well for you? Got questions? Wanna reccomend a different, easier program? Sound off in the comments!

Picture this scenario, you want — no, NEED — a new phone that just isn’t available on your carrier, for example those who want an iPhone but lack AT&T service, or others who want a T-Mobile phone but not their wireless plan. Or maybe you’re traveling overseas soon and by unlocking your phone, you avoid those outrageous roaming charges.

If so, I have some good news for you: you can easily unlock any GSM phone by calling the carrier whose branded the phone or by using the internet to search for the unlock code.

But I have to warn you, this is only available if both your original phone and your phone-to-be have SIM cards; if they arent GSM carriers, I hate to say it, but you arent qualified. See below for the list of GSM/SIM card phones and greater detail for unlocking your phone.

AT&T, T-Mobile, or Rogers (for our Canadian friends): Congratulations, you qualify. Verizon, Sprint, or Alltel, please play again.

Back to the process, if you have one of the aforementioned GSM carriers and two different network phones, then you’re ready to begin. Now, there are two ways to go about this, you can try to do it from the internet for free or by paying a fee to get it done. The second way — the way I unlocked my AT&T Blackberry 8800 for T-Mobile — is to simply call the carrier that sold the phone first. We’ll get to both methods though so you can see which one suits your fancy.

***CAUTION*** THIS CAN BRICK YOUR PHONE AND RENDER IT USELESS!!!! PROCEED WITH CAUTION!

The Internet Way

First, Google your phone model and put “Unlock codes” after it (example: Blackberry 8800 Unlock code). If that doesn’t work, then try going to one of these sites: http://unlockitfree.com/unlock.php (this one only works for Nokia’s) or http://bilemo.com/solfinder/.

The next step, as mentioned in the sites above, is type in your 15-digit IMEI number, obtainable by typing *#06# into your phone. What will come up is a 15 digit number that the site can use to find your unique unlock code. Once it’s done searching, follow the instructions on how to enter the code from the site and use the codes given. If the code works, then congrats! Your phone is unlocked! If that doesn’t work, then you’re going to have to go with the second method.

The Carrier Way

(Don’t worry, this way won’t brick your phone, but it could incur some charges so make sure it’s free)

This way is a little bit easier than the internet way and, if you or a friend have been with the carrier for more than 90 days, they’ll do it for free.

Just call the carrier that originally sold the phone (the brand on the phone) and tell them that you’re traveling overseas. They will check your account and if they see that you’ve been with them for 90+ days, they’ll begin to help you unlock your phone. Make sure to follow all their instructions and have the IMEI code (see above paragraph) ready. After talking to them and getting the code, just do what they tell you and Voila! Your phone is unlocked!

There you go, you can now use your phone with another carrier (or another carrier’s phone with your carrier). Now we gotta ask- what phone do you want to unlock and which carrier do you want to use it on? Let us know in the comments.

Inspiration and references from the October 2008 physical copy of PCWorld magazine.

Assuming that you have plenty of accounts for emails, social networks, ftp accounts, banking services, Instant Messaging and etc. Technically you might be able to register a same ID for all of these accounts but we bet you are not using only 1 password to access all of them.

You determine the most appropriate passwords for particular accounts but the problem is – “how do you remember all of them?” For this, you can try KeePass.

Before we’re diving in, you might be interested in our previous privacy security related articles:

What is KeePass

KeePass is a free/open-source password manager or safe which helps you to manage your passwords in a secure way. It allows you to put all your password is a lockable encrypted database. To unlock the encrypted database, you only need one master key or a key file.
